The Great Wave Off Kanagawa

The stunning image above is one of Katsushika Hokusai's most famous paintings. Here in the western part of the world, we more commonly refer to it as "The Great Wave," or "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa." Properly translated however, the title is actually "In the Hollow of a Wave Off the Coast at Kanagawa," which is part of Hokusai's "36 Views Of Mount Fuji" series. SCHOOL DAYS, SCHOOL DAYS

Hey teens,

I hope you enjoyed a really great summer. I just finished up a very busy, but totally awesome summer reading club as well as having had many other exciting teen programs too. So now I'm looking forward to the start of what I hope will be a truly rewarding school year.

Many teens only thought that there were programs for them during the summer, so I'm posting the September program schedule for teens in grades 6 - 12. I'm happy to say that I try and plan as many fun and interesting programs as I can throughout the entire school year as well. So I'm hoping that many of you will consider participating.

Thanks,
Denise J.
Teen Librarian

SEPTEMBER'S TEEN PROGRAMS:

 September is “National Library Card Sign-Up Month,” and during this special month teens in grades 6 & up receive a small prize or treat when they show the Teen Librarian their valid library card.

 “Write On!” Teen Writers’ Group for grades 6 & up; Thursday, September 2nd at 3:30 PM. Do you enjoy writing fiction, poetry, plays, comics or manga? If you answered yes, then join our Teen Writers’ group. The group meets twice a month so teens can share and work on their writing and ideas, receive feedback on their writing, and “free write” just for fun! Teens are asked to bring a notebook or a journal. (Sign-up begins on Monday, August 16th).

 “Miscellaneous Music” for grades 6 & up; Tuesday, September 7th at 3:15 PM. If you like music and want to share your thoughts with other teens, then you’ll want to join this great, monthly club. Bring your iPod or a favorite CD to share with the group. (Sign-up begins on Monday, August 23rd).

Teens are allowed to bring their own games that are compatible with the Nintendo Wii gaming system, however teens will only be allowed to play games with an “E” or a “T” rating. Teens are also asked to bring extra remotes, nunchuks, and wheels too. There will be plenty of other fun games on hand for teens to keep busy while they wait their turn. (Sign-up begins on Monday, August 23rd).

 “Scrabble & Chess Club” for grades 6 & up; Friday, September 10th at 3:15 PM. Teens can have fun playing either board game with their friends. The group meets one Friday a month. (Sign-up begins on Monday, August 23rd).

CALLING ALL TEENS!!! CALLING ALL TEENS!!!

The Mahwah Public Library needs your help.  On Tuesday, July 20th we'll be conducting a special study and we're looking for recruits.

INFORMATION SCIENCE STUDY

Q: How many librarians does it take to make an awesome library?

A: One more than we already have!

• Are you between 10 and 17 years of age?

• Are you reasonably familiar with using a laptop computer (keyboard and mousing), or able to tell a friend how to use it for you?

• Do you want to help a library student earn her librarian degree?

If you answered YES to these questions, you may be eligible to participate in a research study about information retrieval and how to build better search engines.

The purpose of this research study is to compare several versions of a search engine that tries to understand normal human language. As part of the study design, each participant may receive some number (between 0 and 20) of small candy pieces, depending on the search engine’s performance.

Teens/young adults between 10 and 17 years of age are eligible.

Please see the Teen Librarian, Denise Jukniewicz, to volunteer, or contact Kim Jones at mahwweb@bccls.org or (201) 529-7323 x 228 for more information.

This study is being conducted by Kimberley Jones, a Master of Library Science candidate at Southern Connecticut State University’s School of Communication, Information and Library Science, under the generous auspices of the Mahwah Public Library.

Just click on the link below to print out the information and your consent form and bring them in to Denise J. the Teen Librarian.  Or just stop by her desk to pick up a copy.  Also, let her know what time slot you'd like to fill.  We thank you for your participation; it is truly appreciated!!!

UMM UMM GOOD!

On behalf of the library staff and myself, I'd like to give a BIG thanks to the delicious treats that some teens have made and shared with us.  Serena Graniero, your "Banana Bread" was scrumdidily-umptious, and Michelle Park your "Cupcakes" were OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD!!!  Also, Daniela Ganley thank you so much for your delicious "Cinnamon Toast."  That made my day when I tried it!

Yay!!!  Even more yummies from Sara Strauch who brought in samples of her delicious "Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars," and William Strauch who brought in a devine sample of his "Chicken Divane" recipe.  I'm in heaven!!!  Jenny Chan's "Egg Roll" was absolutely delicious as well, and my tummy was SO happy.  Manan Garg brought in a sample of his delicious "Pecan Burfi" too which was totally awesome!   And Rachael Neer brought back childhood memories for me by bringing in a delicious sample of her "PB & J Sushi."  It's peanut butter & jelly, but with a yummy twist!  And Rocco Migliaccio's pancake TOTALLY made my day!!!  Thanks so much everyone!!!  : )

WOW!!!!  How lucky am I?!?!  Even more delicious treats from Christina Vita whose "Cranberry" treats were absolutely delicious.  Jenny Chan made fabulous "Almond Cookies," and Allison Homler's "Banana Bread" was totally fantastic!

Don't forget teens, you too can earn mega points towards your teen summer challenge sheets if you write down your favorite recipe and hand it in to me.  Of course, samples of your recipe will not only earn you even more points, but will make our tummies extra happy.  : )

Mahalo,
Denise J.

We were supposed to be having our "T-Shirt Bleach Art" program on that day. I'm rescheduling it for this Friday, July 2nd at 3:00 PM. Again, I apologize but I hope many of you will still be able to come.

You Teens Are Totally Awesome!!!

Dear Teens,

I have to say how truly proud I am of all of the Teen Summer Reading Club participants.  We're only entering Day 9 officially (as of Tuesday, July 29th), but so many of you have really taken to completing your challenges and are working so hard.  Keep up the great work, and don't forget to tell your friends about the club.  As a matter of fact, I think that I'll reward some extra points to you all if you can bring at least one friend to sign-up.

Also, don't forget that we have some really great programs coming up.  Wednesday, June 30th at 3:00 PM is the "Fun With Zoob" program.  Thursday, July 1st at 3:00 PM is the "Making Friendship Bracelets" program and weather permitting we'll be out front for that so bring a comfy blanket or cushion to sit on if you like.

Next week, we'll be having the "T-Shirt Bleach Art" program on Tuesday, July 6th at 3:15 PM.  You just need to bring a dark colored t-shirt and the library will provide the bleach pens.  On Wednesday, July 7th is the "Lego Pirate Picnic" program at 3:15 PM.  Again, weather permitting we'll be outside for that so bring a comfy blanket or cushion to sit on.  You'll be working in teams to put together various pirate lego sets which will go on display in the Teen section for the rest of the summer.  Once the summer is over, I'll be raffling them off to the teens who came to the program.  On Thursday, July 8th will be having a "Scavenger Hunt" in the library at 3:15 PM.  You'll be working in teams to help answer questions and find clues in order to win your "treasure."  And then on Friday, July 9th at 3:00 PM I'll be showing the movie "Ponyo on the Cliff By the Sea."

As you see, we have a busy, but fun schedule ahead of us this summer so I hope to see everyone at the library a lot these next few months.

Thanks,
Denise J.
Teen Librarian

P.S.  We'll even be making snow cones in the upcoming weeks, so that's why I had to include the cute kitty!!! : )
